    Maps - Models - Textures

Posted 08 May 2012 - 08:37

There's been a lot of talk about whether or not you should use dev textures in the final release of your GMR map.
Some people think it looks ugly, since all maps end up looking the same, while others say it will just look worse if you texture a map that has originally been designed to use dev textures.

So I bring you...

Colorful Developer Textures

I made this texture pack for those GMR maps that look quite dull with the default dev textures, but would look even worse with realistic textures.

The package includes:
  • 17 different colors
  • 3 patterns for each color (grid, checkered, stripes)
  • A black & white checkered texture
  • 65kb per texture
  • A total of 55 developer textures!

as you see, these dev textures even look good as grass or sand surfaces :3

... Or if you just want to make a simple map more colorful

Thanks :3

@Thom

To use in hammer editor:
Extract the .zip to the materials folder of the game you are mapping for
(example: steam/steamapps/<username>/half-life 2/hl2/materials)

Before you release the map:
Use Pakrat (or another method) to include the textures in the .bsp file. Pakrat will automatically include only the textures you've used in the map with the click of a button.

thanks everyone :3.

Didn't want to make a big project out of it though, so made it in about an hour (with 90% of the time spent renaming and organising files). It could be better, but it's good enough for a dev textured gmr map :3

You have to put it into the materials file of the game you are using in hammer.

If you select css then you put the mats in the css materials folder.

As many have said, this is a great idea, It'll make a map not ugly, and not be a pain in the ass to use :)

@mista_bojjob
if you don't put it in the exactly correct file location it won't work. just drag the folder named "gmracer" into the "materials" folder and it will work.
The complete path to the texture files needs to be:
Steam/Steamapps/<username>/<game>/<gamedir>/materials/gmracer/dev

Pakrat.

Didn't development of that stop in like 2006? :P
Try packbsp, you don't need to go manually find the files like you just did

Also: You, mapping tutorial, lol
